I've seen a few stoats before when I've been out and about, but never small ones before.

As for the fishing... a lot comes down to the better presentation on the pole, and also the feeding. Most anglers on the lake are a little chuck it and chance it on carp tactics - sure they catch (eventually) but never in quantities.
