My mates have all the best gear wile i have this cheap stuff and i know they will catch more than me because of that reason i am thinking of packing it all in i will never have the money they have to spend on top gear.
Now i said never think like that lad you can catch just as much as them if not more it is not the gear that catches fish it is the right method, presentation and bait learn to read the water and don't become one track minded like fishing out in deep water think about the margins you will be surprised the top gear only plays a small part in fishing in some case it is no more than a status symbol but if you use it wrong it is worthless and as always i told him a true story.
I fished a venue once and on the next peg from me there was this guy who had nothing but cheap looking gear but a little bit further away was another guy fishing a pole, looked the part expensive seatbox the works and it must have cost a packet i guess £2000 worth of gear now compare that to this other guy who was using the cheap gear that cost no more than£100 top wack then the way you are thinking you would say he would be fished off the water but no way,he was catching all day roach, rudd, skimmers and perch on maggot and casters now this other guy although looking the part struggled most of the day fishing long pole with pellets so that just shows it is not the gear but the method and bait.
At this point as i knew the venue he was going to i asked what bait he was taking he said maggot i said wait there i will give you something that will catch you some fish and i gave him some worms that i was saving for next weeks fishing,i told him to use worm section on the hook no more than half a inch long and feed up with maggot about a dozen at a time anyway he thanked me and off he went about a half hour ago he came back looking rather pleased with him self so i asked how did it go and with a broad smile he said great, fished them off the pool caught a lot of roach and perch they only caught a few minnows and got fed up in the end a packed up well done i said did the worms help out i asked yes he replied that's all i used on the hook so as i said to you it is not the cost of your gear that counts but the right method and presentation and with that we said thanks and off he went home.
I did know that worm would do well there as i have caught many using the very same method at that venue that little bit of knowledge helped him out i guess and hopefully has changed his mind about packing it in but i just wonder how many more think like that out there and how many are giving up fishing as a result of this way of thinking,do you think that the magazines of today are giving out the wrong impression on the youngsters of today when they look at them and see nothing but expensive gear being used by the top guys of our sport and think that is what they need to do well maybe we should emphasize that you should start at the bottom of the scales and work up instead of promoting these top of the range gear in such away that it looks like the be all and end all of our sport.
