When to the local pond near Wilford next to the Trent......Baits were red and bronze maggot, red worms, pineapple boilies, sweetcorn, pellets and meat......
I fished a rod on the alarm with pop up pineapple boilies with normal boilies and mini pellets. 10lb main line with a 8lb bottom. A float rod with waggler and a size 14 hook to start and changed down to a 16 when not catching.....Which happened for a while after I arrived.......
The feeder rod did not have a take all day......Even though there were large carp turning over the top.......And a terrapin swimming by every now and then....The pond also had a snapping turtle in at one time but thankfully that was caught and taken to the RSPCA......Its a good job I used to watch wild life programmes with my son when he was young or I wouldn't have recognised it......They can be very nasty and take your finger off easily.........
On the float rod when changed down in hook size started catching small perch......Wouldn't take maggot and wouldn't take a worm but got bites when putting both on at the same time.......Funny fishing isn't it........left the sweetcorn and the meat in my bag as the fella fishing next to me had a similar set up with meat on the feeder and sweetcorn on the float and wasn't even getting any indications at all........
Gradually the perch started to get a little bigger but no roach showed at my end of the lake at all.......and only a few at the other.....Then the bream started to show...Its a weird lake....ground bait kills of the swim as soon as you put it in so you normally have to keep a constant trickle of loose feed going in to keep the fish interested......I caught a couple of little skimmers then the surprise of the day a big 5 lb slab......(as mentioned before. Picture to follow)
Had to finish at 2pm due to going to a meeting about setting up a little fishing club in our local pub......Not a serious one that match fishes every week but just a group of mates who once or twice a month pick a venue and book pegs to have a laugh........
It was a smashing and rewarding session and learned a lot about the pond....The EA have done a lot of work on it making it a flood pond for the Trent.....So the part I fished was really like a new venue........
Now for the bad part.....A local bailiff who lives in the village and bailiffs for Notts Fed, has spent a lot of time cleaning and cutting back the swims on the pond and has made it so you want to fish it again....He doesn't have to do this as no one runs the water at present as the last people gave it up a couple of years ago...On Friday, 5 bivvy boys arrived and took up a large part of the lake....No problem as there were still plenty of swims to fish.....They left just after I had arrived on Sunday morning and guess what.....All around one of the bivvys were beer cans and boxes, pizza boxes they had fetched and other general rubbish.......The state of the pond had put me of fishing it for a couple of years and the work of this man had opened it up again to a lot of local fishermen who now have started to go again quite often.....So today instead of going fishing again.....I am going to help the bailiff with a couple of other fishermen to clean up the mess........These people make me so mad.....I could scream or something.........
Didn't let it spoil my day.....anyway no one could have upset me yesterday after the mighty reds starting there journey back to were they belong in the premiership.............
