Tomorrow, in the morning, I am going on the Dane (the Lithuanian one not the English one :D ) and am thinking I might try a new tactic. I like to keep things
simple with my rigs because I often think the more you complicate things the more chance there is your tackle will spook the fish. With this in mind I may try
just a line straight through to a trace, two trebles and a half mackerel or Herring.
The rig would allow me to hold bottom from the weight of the dead bait while any touch from a Pike should register using a buzzer or bobbin. Any thoughts? |

In the end I went for my usual rig, a bung float set slightly over depth with main line streight through to a trace with two trebbles. Result = BLANK!!!!
Conditions seems good for Pike, foggy, -2 at the start and -1 and the end but I only had Herring sections and have never done any good with these in Lithuania.
My best results have always been with small whole fish such as Bleak. Any time now the Smelt will come into season then we should start getting a few more
Pike! ...I hope

Unfortunately I am not able to get Lamprey out here. In the UK I have had most joy on Sprats or Smelt, I am not a big fan larger fish like Herring but am stuck with them for another week or two. That having been said, having seen the weather forecast it could be a while before I am back on the bank anyway :D |

Sometimes the pike are just not feeding, you could try every rig in the book - If they don't want to feed they won't. I've freelined a live bait
right in front of a resting pike in clear water, it sat there oblivious to it, then got p***ed off with being disturbed and sauntered off!
Keep rigs as simple as possible and have beilief in what you are using, I'm still yet to catch a pike on Lamprey, others have caught thousands, confidence thats all it is. |

Funny you should say that about Lamprey halibutflap because having told Bruce I can't buy them here... guess what, went into the supermarket, and there
they were on the fish counter :D
So how do I use these ugly brutes, half a fish at a time? |

yep cut in half mate, when you use the head section cut the head off through the gills to release loads of blood and scent

Halibutflap, if I have understood correctly, when fishing the head section I am fishing it without the head?

If the river ever stops being flood and we have a day when we are not having either a blizzard or torrential rain, I might actually get to give it a go :D
Thanks for the help everybody, fingers crossed I might have some luck when I finally do get some time on the bank :)

What have we here |

I still us an 1/8 or 1/4oz bucktail jig for these boogers. Normally with 17lb test spiderwire. Seems to work well, though abrasion will take it's toll on
your line.

The balloon rig yes it works but not good for the environment!! It leaves the balloon remnants scattered on the down wind bank.
"Should you be fishing alone, pull the line or braid with your teeth to raise the hooks up. NO NO please NO dont do it, your asking for trouble. Weils disease is possible. Re the trolling rig using a pencil float as per diagram. It will pull under to easily better to use a stubbier float. The rig would allow me to hold bottom from the weight of the dead bait while any touch from a Pike should register using a buzzer or bobbin. Any thoughts? Yes...... a pike could pick up the bait and move within a radius of the distance fished without any indication showing. Using a leger prevents this. |

Izzak, this may sound a little thick but what is the balloon rig? Paints pictures of tying the dead bait to a
party balloon and floating across the river |
