keep tight at all times otherwise if the hooks are just in the scissors or bony plate the hooks will be shaken loose ,more so if using barbless hooks !!

As Bruce said keep it tight as it will throw the hook.

Cheers lads .....Thanks for the advise.....I seem OK with jacks when they do it.....It just when a 8lb one did it, I was lost on what to do......
But must admit it was very exciting......... |

I keep the line tight but also throw the rod over close to and parallel with the water ensuring that as close as possible the line is at 90 deg from the pike.
My thinking is that this will cause the pike to be pulled off balance and return to the water.

izzak ya beat me to it ,meant to add i sometimes even put the rod top under water so you dont get the sudden jerk backs from shaking its head which is why the
hooks pull free !!it acts as a cushioning !!

Sound advice given above - If you want to see how its done watch any fishing program with an expert playing a tarpon. You will see plenty of tail walking in
that fight and as said above you need to keep a tightline and keep the rod at an angle to keep the maximum pressure

The problem tail walkers present is the hooks being thrown as the head is shaken. As well as the pike landing on the line and breaking it.
If its a small pike say "what the hell" and enjoy the excitement what ever the outcome. If its a biggie then tighten up the sphincter muscles and hold on tight. |

Had my first tail walking pike of the season on opening day. Must admit it wasnt what I intended to catch as I had cast to some chub but jack took a liking to
the worm. Only a couple of pounds in weight but on 4lb BS line and a 8's hook good stuff.
