After several sessions on the lakes I today returned to the Dane River and a session on one my favorite swims from last year, The Sunken Tree http://www.wandering-angler.com/dane.html

It was another clear sunny day and there still has been no rain so the water level continues to fall. I set up with a 12 foot match rod fishing 2 LB line, 18 hook and stick float with the depth set to hard bottom at around 2 rod lengths out. I elected to fish just beyond some lily pads that now are well up in the water and soon will be on the surface.

From the off it was clear to see this was going to be a good session and after a couple of small roach I hooked into one of the fattest skimmers I have ever seen. That was followed by another and yet another and slowly I began to fill my net with fat healthy fish that battled as if they were fish 2 or 3 times bigger.

The banks were full of life; mink scurried back and forth along the far bank while huge diving beetles leisurely swam past. This was a great day to be in the woods on the side of a river and I soaked it all up and loved it!

I fished for a total of 5 hours for a total of 170 fish of which at least 100 were skimmers of between 4oz and 12oz so yet again I went home with an aching arm but a very big smile!
